Runway Report

A visit to Rohit Abhishek's flagship hinted at their signature style i.e. Indian Royalty, menswear that is suitable for evening wear and ceremonial occasions. Think Jodhpuri collars and riders though what caught our attention — and held it — were buttons made of rubies and emeralds! So is it any wonder that I was eagerly looking forward to their showing at Rajasthan Heritage Week the following evening?

Rohit Abhishek blended the utilitarian spirit of khadi with the precision of couture tailoring. It was a spectacular outing where the taut elegance of an expertly-tailored man was accentuated with the precision of a fast-paced show. Achkans, sherwanis, kurta-pyjamas and bandhgalas were shown astride pea coats, hunting jackets and tuxedos. I just loved the black khadi wool pea coat with red detailing and the crimson khadi wool sleeveless jacket; cut with sleek precision, it looked regal with a black kotadoria shirt and grey riders. The crimson wool khadi hunting jacket worn over an off-white bandi and beige riders was a winner too and brought stylish Polo evenings to mind.

The show drew to a heartwarming close when Bhagwan Sahay Kanungo, a 94-year-old freedom fighter and khadi supporter, walked on to the catwalk, folding his hands in response to a quiet standing ovation. Aided by a walker, he stood on the ramp and received applause not just for his work — he was 18 when he participated in the Satyagraha and joined the Khadi movement — but his invincible spirit. Kanungo resides in Jaipur and his family is still working on sustaining Khadi, the duo explained; honouring him at a platform celebrating handloom fabric was fitting.
