RITU BERI

Runway Report

Ritu Beri's show at PCJ Delhi Couture Week had an energy and a sense of fun. Titled 'Punjabi Rock 'n' Roll' it paid homage to the state of Punjab and its flamboyant fashion aesthetic. As the first model walked out I was reminded if fashion is alchemy.. Beri's couture is one of its most unequivocal expressions: Ruffled tiered ensembles that had been exaggerated for effect. A loud palette. Gold masks—its provenance and the time spent transforming it into a couture accessory was evident in the detailing.

As the show progressed there was something appealing and deferential about her clear thought process of paying respect to her homeland. Though there was a sense of whimsy in the sculpted looks, the exaggerated volume in others were the product of serious thought. Her idea was to reinterpret traditional Punjabi ensembles in a theatrical global frame and that strategy made for some standout runway looks like the sari-inspired gown and the Patiala salwars.. the lehengas and the shararas. Overall with such a flamboyant theme it was only fitting that the show closed with live Punjabi songs when the designer came out to take a bow!!
