Runway Report

One of the pioneering designers of the Eighties, Rina Dhaka transformed the nation into an epicentre of avant-garde fashion. While a classical aesthetic evolved as the hallmark of Indian designers, she continually balanced it with her sexy stylish aesthetic. Her showcase at Pune Fashion Week was no different.

The star-truffled show began with a charity walk by Smile Foundation, where fashionistas and kids walked the ramp to generate funds for education of the girl child. The noble endeavour closed with a round of applause and then it was time for Bijoux By Rina Dhaka. When the opening look came out, it was evident to me that the designer was showcasing her love for jewellery, through her ensembles — mixing metallics, blending them together.

I was stunned to see how Dhaka had employed special techniques of using foil on chiffons, to create a metallic backdrop. Jewellery motifs were adopted and taken inspiration from, and edged with pearls, to showcase the dazzle of bijoux jewellery, on the garments. Hot-sellers included the off-shoulder velvet full-sleeve top with metallic flowers offset by pearls, worn with a sheer black skirt; the bronze sari with a delicate lace pallav and flared skirt; the dhoti skirts; th shara pants; and the closing look flaunted by Divya Khosla Kumar — an ajrakh printed skirt with a lame gold blouse! Looks that could be worn right off the catwalk into a glamorous party or festivity. Like Rina Dhaka says, "Life is already so difficult. There is no need for Fashion to be too difficult as well."
