Runway Report

Rahul Mishra's showcase at India Couture Week took seed in the village he hails from, where the beauty of nature blooms in the monsoons, and inspired by artist Ernst Haeckel's 'Kunstformen der Natur'.

From the first look, it was clear classic bridal silhouettes crafted from lavishly hand-embroidered textiles were going to be showcased with the precision of a global design aesthetic. Bringing handwoven traditional textiles to the forefront like organic khadi, silk organza and muga silk, Mishra surprised us by reinventing the bridal palette with calming water-colour tones of indigo, mint, blush and ivories on lehengas, anarkalis, saris, kurtas and palazzos—embellished with intricate threadwork lifted with restrained use of gold yarn and badla. Is it a wonder then the collection took 200 karigars around six months to craft? My favourite look — the peacock lehenga with elaborate hand embroideries — perfect for a wedding and occasion wear thereafter! All you need to do is style it differently.
