Runway Report

A Taika showing is an accurate barometer of the mood of fashion. Poonam Bhagat shows a sensitive radar for current trends and a great deal of finesse in interpreting them in an appealing accessible way. Her show added a shot of energy at Delhi Times Fashion Week, managed by Talent Factory, and was a testament to the ethos of her label where artisan tradition and design aesthetic fuse to create ensembles like no other.

In recent seasons, her collections have registered a modern, minimalist look. It's all about a certain ease — sleek and well edited. The focus is on a classic style and that feels concise and fresh, feminine but not too girly, playful tempered with an austere feel. Along with day-to-night options—including separates and haute evening dresses, there were cocktail-ready options. I, for one, loved the high-waist voluminous silk skirts appliquéd with gold iridescent tissue, hand embroidered with burnished gold and copper threads, and worn with translucent tissue crop tops and capes with sequinned floral motifs! The long, appliquéd jackets flirting with skirts that kissed the floor is another hot-seller!

The soft voluptuous proportions and minimal palette were pure Taika. Many of the pieces had the most straightforward appeal and guests could be heard raving about the handcrafted evening looks. Accessorised with stunning neckpieces, the look was what many of the fashion insiders would want to sport to their next showing or on a date with a beau! Brimming with happiness, she told me, ''Participation in Delhi Times Fashion Week was exciting and fun. I wish the catwalk was higher and the distance between the media pit and the catwalk was greater although the present MSA lent itself to a very cozy feel.''
