JAYA MISRA
Runway Report

Kolkata designer Jaya Misra's luxuriously embellished creations which opened Hyderabad Fashion Week were threaded with a modicum of severity, making this showing feel new, and winningly so. There was an appealing austerity to the sari, the sari gown and the lehenga. Likewise, the creatively layered menswear with a buoyant sense of movement. All around, a visual feast, with jewelled headgear.

This is Jaya Misra we're talking about, of course, so there was no lack of intricacy in the detailing. "This collection, like the others, is about luxury. There's nothing watered down." How could there be when her inspiration was steeped in Sufi heritage proudly worn by Mughal royalty of yore? "Regal" was the word she used here, and it fit. The architecture of the stage, the lighting and Sufiana music all contributed towards recreating a royal Sufi ambience. This was Jaya Misra at her most assured and the collection proved to be her strongest in seasons. Each piece got the royal treatment — the lavish use of embroideries like zardozi and aari, stone work and beads, and deep saturated colours was an exemplary display of the finest craftsmanship. We're looking forward to more of this kind of thing from Jaya Misra. Stemming from the historical | contemporary divide — the bridal looks were spectacular. (19.12.2012)
