JAYA MISRA

Runway Report

Jaya Misra's opening show at Dubai India Fashion Week brought latent talent in full sight. Hailing from Kolkata, she has steadily built a business—and clients like Amitabh Bachchan and Aditya Roy Kapoor—around traditional Indian ensembles with a sensuous soul.

Titled 'Rangrez', the collection took inspiration from affluent India captured in its intricately embellished luxurious fabrics and bold palette. "I wanted practical volume" she explained. "India has a history of affluence and intellect—and beautiful women. This is my interpretation." This move raised the bar and she pulled it off by orchestrating a complete bridal look from jewel-toned lehengas to shararas and cocktail saris with dramatic draping crafted from chiffon and georgette.. lace and net.. velvet and brocade. The youthful element was present in cutout backs and crop tops.. will power shoulders and stylish draped saris. Jaya Misra had the crowd right from the beginning but the look showcased by Soha Ali Khan—"traditional ensemble with a bold pop of red- fuchsia- tangerine " she called it—was so fabulous in its lavishness it's hard to imagine anything this bridal season will top it.
