GAURI AND NAINIKA

Runway Report

Gauri and Nainika Karan's admiration for old world Hollywood glamour has been well documented in their collections and for Spring Summer 2013 at WIFW the duo  took a well-worn reference—Audrey Hepburn's Royal Ascot gown from 'My Fair Lady'—but worked it with a light fresh touch. Romance is the essence of their aesthetic and whatever the theme, womanliness is always the outcome.

The optic play of black and white could be traced in the snow white dresses with black sashes, ribbons and inflated ruffles that circled the neckline or flirted with the hem. "There's romance in this collection that hasn't been there before" they explained backstage. Their best moments were the simplest — a line of black and white dresses crafted from crepe and diaphonous handloom weaves draped to clasp the hips, waist and shoulders and clearly intended for elegant temptresses — a display of couture skill that comes only with practice.
