Runway Report

Though couture is heading in a minimalist direction that didn't inspire Gaurav Gupta to turn down the theatrical dial at his Summer Resort ‘19 showing at The Royal Opera House, Mumbai. Titled 'The Unfolding', his collection fused the handwoven fabrics with gravity-defying origami-folding and a play of structural- fluid construction.

As guests took their seats, there was awed silence when the curtains opened to reveal a stage swathed in white fabric, from which poetess Navkirat Sodhi rose up to the ceiling, with her voluminous self-embroidered white gown flowing over the stage, as she recited poetry. And then the showing began… the couturier brought his muse Tabu to life right from the first look—a grey gown with strapless boned bodice, liberally embellished with three-dimensional georgette flowers twinkling with crystals. Moving on, models glided down from the curved spiral staircase down to the ramp. We clocked several beauties — from demi couture handcrafted with Chikankari and deconstructed brocade lehengas that are sure to be on every millennial bride's must-have list to the mélange of asymmetrical minis, pantsuits with capes, draped trousers, skirts with three-dimensional appliqué, intricately draped blouses, sari gowns, neo saris and second skinesque gowns, some with organza and georgette flowers lifted with crystals. However the yellow wired, curved and moulded will-power gown went down as the most stunning look and had everyone reaching out for their phones to capture the most trending Fashion image on social media. Menswear saw black tuxedos, some with shimmering lapels or zippered tailcoats; red biker jacket; brocade dinner jackets; and long shimmering sherwanis. Interestingly, chikankari was juxtaposed with velvet and jacquard. Karan Johar closed the showing in a rose one-button jacket with black lapels and corded epaulets, worn with black slim pants.

As the showing closed to thunderous applause, it was evident that Gaurav Gupta's forte continues to be red carpet and bridal fashion; the designer has perfected the art of lavish sets, theatrics, sculpted silhouettes and couture embellishment—all elements that define high-octane glamour.
