ASIF MERCHANT

Runway Report

Asif Merchant has a classic sensibility—sharp, modern and wearable. While his focus is cut and styling, there was a distinct workmanship of couture. ''Designing is an intensely personal act. It reflects my personal style and my nature. As a man and designer, I'm simple and elegant which reflects in my collections. The garments I create would never scream for attention as don't I! Yes, at times I do struggle between creativity and wearability when designing because practicality hinders my creativity. For India Beach Fashion Week I've designed a mix of resort wear, Indian fusion and red carpet look as it's the only platform which is based on resort and destination wedding'' Asif Merchant told me before his showing.

As the show opened, I had the feel that big-city glamour was the base for Merchant's two-pronged collection—which is sure to usher in a season of polished dressing for day and evening. It appeared he had got the memos about soft romanticism—de-structured, fluid looks crafted with tulle, taffeta, scuba georgette and moss crepe that crystallised the casual opulence of the current fashion moment. The evening templates—the evening gowns with French bead work sequins and bugle beads and the sheer outerwear worn nonchalantly over bustiers and minis—were in sync with the drift of resort fashion. So, is it a wonder there were enquiries about when these looks would be available before the designer took his bow?
