Anupama Dayal's muse is a global Indian who puts effort into what she wears. Dayal's signature style is bohemian- globally relevant and steeped in Indian craft- but the subtext in the designer's show at Lotus MakeUp India Fashion Week gave it a sombre edge. 'Broken' was evocative of how women piece broken bits of their lives to emerge stronger.
The designer, who loves to use block prints in her collections, went with the star fish as the dominant motif owing to its ability to regenerate new limbs when it gets damaged. And the rainbow because she feels every woman deserves it. Patchwork with ‘boundaries defined in gold are evocative of her belief that when an object has suffered damage it becomes even more beautiful and the gold in the cracks are homage to this.
Speaking of the collection, the languid resort wear was versatile—you could wear it to brunch, dinner with a beau or slip it over a bikini—simple or dressed up with her scarves and handmade jewellery. My thoughts as I walked out of the showing was how her collections are beyond the cut and colors it ensures sustainable livelihood for her crafts people — underprivileged women she closely works with. An example of conscious fashion.
