NIFT alumnus Amit Aggarwal's design aesthetic — sculptural silhouettes and ingenious application of industrial materials — took shape at a young age when he observed his father working on engineering projects. His fifteen -piece capsule collection 'First Light' at Lakme Fashion Week 2020 was the sharpest elucidation of his aesthetic and a reminder that he is a designer of great individuality. Forget shrinking violets: recycled polymer was married with indigenous fabrics like Chanderi and matka silk, transforming the traditional idea of festive and bridal couture with a modern progressive outlook.

Any sign of hope is gratefully received in these turbulent times and Amit Aggarwal took inspiration from the cosmos to send out a message — be a star that refuses to dim when shadowed. That said, the design inspiration and treatment is Indian as leheriya created an illusion of the cosmos and mixed temple motifs from South India was blended with polymer to create interesting motifs. Effortful? Absolutely. The fluid skirts, separates, lehenga and saris were all wearable ensembles rather than costumes.
