NIFT alumnus Amit Aggarwal's design aesthetic — sculptural silhouettes and ingenious application of industrial materials — took shape at a young age as he observed his father working on engineering projects. His opening show at FDCI India Couture Week 2019 was the sharpest elucidation of his aesthetic and a reminder that his strength is a grand almost- theatrical gesture. Forget shrinking violets: weightless tulle lace and organzas were intricately hand embroidered and crafted into structural silhouettes, transforming the traditional idea of bridal couture into a modern progressive outlook.

As the show began, editors and front row guests purred at the sight of a bridal lehenga with sculpted Edwardian bustle and sarees with dramatic trails. Exploring the relationship between science and design, each ensemble was enhanced by sheer drapes and layers creating an illusion of metallic color through shadow play. Effortful? Absolutely. Crafted with one-of-a kind traditional textiles in collaboration with Taani by Tanira Sethi, these pieces were all wearable ensembles rather than costumes. The menswear was just as wide-ranging — classic Indian silhouettes handcrafted with layered Jacquards, silks and geometric woven textiles, enhanced with three-dimensional hand embroideries.
