NEW DELHI: The Twitter tag of TajHotels — "Discover the Taj difference" — is bang on! Taj Hotels pampers guests with state-of-the art facilities, luxurious accommodation, sumptuous cuisine and the most hospitable management. So, although I'm a Marriott and ITC loyalist, I decided to stay in Taj Mahal to experience the difference. Its location in Lutyens Delhi makes it ideal for tourists- foodies- shopaholics and business travellers — hey it's a stone's throw from Khan Market, India Gate, Lodhi Garden and Connaught Place!!

The location allows for more space than a city hotel with its mammoth lobby | all-hours restaurant Machan | iconic Japanese restaurant Wasabi By Morimoto where I had the sumptuous luncheon and dinner | Indian restaurant Varq | Pan Asian restaurant House Of Ming | European rooftop restaurant The Grill Room | The Emperors Lounge | popular bar Ricks | spa, salon, state-of-the-art gym and magnificent outdoor pool! Coming to my stay, I was quickly checked-in and escorted to a pool-facing deluxe room. What impressed me on walking in was — it was almost the size of a suite! I loved the sofa sets with the contemporary floral art over it and huge windows with magnificent views of the pool and lush greenery beyond and the softest bed with an assortment of body pillows- mood lighting, work desk, floor-length mirrors and spacious washroom! Pretty soon, I got a welcome note and a platter of fruits and cookies.

Unpacking and freshening up, I made my way down to the lobby and took a flight of stairs down to Wasabi where I had reserved a table- for- one. Since I wanted to save my appetite for dinner, I simply ordered my favourite — Spicy Salmon Maki and sake cocktail. As expected, the maki, dabbed with fresh wasabi, was sumptuous. And that set the tone of the relaxed day. Shortly, I strolled down to the poolside with a book and beer, just chilling and taking in the meditatively quiet ambience and sunset. It was deeply relaxing… and a stark contrast from my fast paced lifestyle. Returning to my room, I quickly got dressed for drinks and dinner with my closest friends, at Wasabi [click here for the review!] where we indulged in the most flavourful assorted sushi platter, Black Cod In Miso and Pork Kakuni and followed it up with cocktails at Rick's.

And that brings me to the last thoughts on check-out at 10 a.m. — the warm hospitality throughout the stay, the competitive pricing, the personalised service and the discreet luxury ensure guests will not want to check out—until they do!! I was unpleasantly surprised to see all the check-out guests escorted to a counter at the side of the lobby, with no chair and no warmth, unlike those checking in.
