Sabyasachi Mukherjee graduated from NIFT in 1999 and launched his label within four months. While a brooding, intellectual quality has evolved as the hallmark of Bengal, Sabyasachi balances it with a poetic ethnic-eclectic sensibility. His loyal clientele—including Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan—remains so due to his artful prints on separates and his signature—a potpourri sensibility i.e. splicing together prints, textures, embroideries and fabrics when he is not making seemingly formal silhouettes pop. He is a colorist too—for spring 2009 Sabyasachi paired an amethyst skirt with a saffron and rust blouse… and indulged his quirky side in the scallop petal detailing inspired by… chicken feathers! This edgy sensibility is perhaps what kickstarted his career: few know that Sabyasachi won the Femina-British Council Most Outstanding Young Designer Award 2001 that earned him an internship with Georgina Von Etsdorf in London. Of late he has launched a regal flagship in the heart of Mumbai.
