With government mandate making face masks compulsory, it looks like we're going to be wearing it for a while. Given the prevalence of selfies, masks have transformed into fashion accessories, giving rise to the 'statement mask'. Hey, there are several sexy, sassy masks out there but what comes to mind is 'Masks By Kavita' by Kavita Kharayat Kamble and Sunny Kamble with its riot of neons, metallics and animal prints. In conversation with Kavita whom I have known and admired, on and off the catwalk, for over a decade.
"CoronaVirus was the inspiration behind 'Masks By Kavita’. On a serious note, we were under lockdown like everybody else and masks became a compulsion post-lockdown too; we didn't really like the masks that were available at that time and that's how we thought of designing safe, stylish masks.
Of course, modelling is our first love, and always will be, though we do diversify from time to time with runway walk training, styling, fashion direction and online coaching, and Sunny with acting workshops and castings. Due to lack of work in the industry during the pandemic and ample time on hand, we were inspired to create something that's the need of the hour, masks, but with our unique touch. My eldest sister Anita helped out with her tailoring skills to create our first collection during Navratri and Diwali, which was liked by many. Moreover, fashion and style has always been a big influence in our lives and both Sunny and I wanted to add our favourite colours and prints like neons, metallics and animal prints which not many mask companies were doing. We're truly grateful and humbled by the support of our friends and for every mask they've worn.
Thinking of the future, we so wish that the world heals from the atrocities of this pandemic and becomes mask-free, but by the looks of it, masks are here to stay awhile! We're definitely coming up with newer designs real soon in addition to continue designing co-ordinated mask chains. We have been asked if we considered diversifying into fashion design… that would be something, wouldn't it?! But, we’re happy in our current space eight now though we would love to consider expanding into a full-fledged fashion label some day; for now we'll Just have to wait and watch!"
