SURAT: NEW FASHION HUB

— Meher Castelino

Fashion weeks and weekends have become part of many mega cities’ calendars’ in India. Hardly had the Myntra Fashion Weekend ended in Mumbai during the first week of October, another one took place a few days later in Gujarat.

Now joining the fashion cities is India’s answer to Antwerp and Manchester: the diamond and textile hub of the country , Surat, which held Indyzn Fashion Festival 2014: an exhibition and Designer Fashion Runway Shows organised by Rajesh Negi. The event had nearly 50 fashion brands and designers from Surat and Mumbai that displayed their ensembles, handbags, footwear and jewellery to eager buyers. The finale however was reserved for Bollywood’s ace designer, Manish Malhotra, whose debut on the Surat ramp was in aid of the ISKCON temple being built in Kharghar. Incidentally not many are aware that Manish Malhotra has been designing for the Juhu ISKCON temple deities since the past five years!

The two-day fashion event was at the ultra-modern Surat Convention Centre where nearly 1000 fashionistas from the city witnessed shows by 13 brands on the first day, shopped and then went ecstatic when Manish Malhotra displayed his stylish ethnic line. Surat is a stylish hub and as the chief guest His Grace Surdas Prabhuji of the ISKCON temple Kharghar said, “A mix of Mumbai and Surat fashion and style could turn this city into the Paris of India because it is the diamond and textile hub of the country.” Fashion must cater to the needs of buyers and Surat, it was apparent, loves glitz, glamour and opulence for its creations, which could be considered at times a trifle over the top in the rest of India! At the exhibition, the sales were rapid for the heavily embellished bridal wear while on the ramp the designers ensured that the ladies and gents of the Diamond City were dressed in shimmering festive and bridal attire. The ladies in the audience were decked in the most opulent saris and jewellery, which proved that Surat was as fashion conscious or even more because of its rich textile and diamond heritage. What seem to appeal to the Surti buyers is a large melangé of embellishments ranging from zardosi to sequins, resham, crystals and appliqué on a mix of different fabrics that are all incorporated on a single garment in many silhouettes!!

The B. D. Somani Institute of Art and Fashion Technology, also the co-organiser of the event, presented its alumni which showed their expertise in festive wear. Gurpreet Kaur’s “Princess Diaries” was a dazzling array of bridal wear with ornate birdcage-inspired embroidery. Jesal Vora’s “Soubhagya” had a mix of lace, velvet and embellishments for saris and bridal wear. Shraddha Vora’s “Saakshi” offered opulence that the Surti ladies loved while Pranjal Kadkade’s fusion line of dhoti pants, kurtas, dresses and crop tops had the requisite glitter to excite the festive shopper. C Singh’s pastel creations included gowns, asymmetric kurtas and palazzos that had enough gold shimmer to appeal to formal wear buyers with jewellery by Preeti Bhatia of “Awesome Sparklers” providing the dazzle. Seema and Deepak Mehta for their “SFW” label brought festive men’s wear to the forefront with superbly crafted jackets having placement motifs.

The Surat design brigade was headed by “Aakash Sarees” while Manish Reshamwala’s mirror work and embroidered jackets, saris and panelled creations targetted the city’s fashionistas. “Alien Zubaa and Shubham Textiles” created by Gopal and Rashmikant was a glamorous mix of rustic formal ethnic and western creations with stylish jewellery by Tip Top Point. Nimita and Vishal gave bridal saris a fashionable twist with contrast petticoats while layered lehengas were opulent in style. Men’s wear was not ignored for bridal and festive wear and was as ornate as women’s wear when sherwanis, bundgalas and jackets glittered with zardosi work from Rajiv and Pooja Jha for “Abhivani”. Making a striking impact and moving away from bling was NIFT graduate Payal Shah’s “Shakuntala” for her label “D’metry” which displayed draped, chiffon, saffron, togas, gowns and midis accessorised with fresh floral necklaces, bracelets, hair ornaments and armlets. Day One ended with Soie by Ginza, the main sponsors of the event. The brand, renowned for exotic inner wear, went western with variations of the Little Black Dress, a stunning collection of gold gowns and ethnic bridal wear.

Manish Malhotra’s elegant line on Day Two opened to a standing room only evening, which gave Surat a taste of Bollywood glamour as the maestro unleashed seductive cholis, some with ballooning velvet sleeves and long rear tie-ups. Maharaj coats with mirror-edged palazzos, restrained colour-blocked saris with glittering borders and an array of batik print lehengas, cholis, tulle dupattas, as well as lacy kalidaar kurtas, were all in a mix of silk, satin, tulle and velvet. Men’s wear was regal and stately with the right touch of elegance. Manish brought his show stoppers model-turned-actor Freddy Daruwala and actress Kriti Sanon in stunning wedding attire.

Indyzn 2014 was the first designer expo and fashion runway shows organised by Rajesh Negi in Surat and from the tremendous response received in the city it will have many repeat happenings in the future!
