IN CONVERSATION WITH NISHITA MANTRY

Nishita Mantry's own struggles, as well as that of her friends' or peers, to find clothes that they would love to wear triggered the idea of creating a fashion label for Plus Size women. In conversation with the designer in the run-up to her show at Pune Fashion Week.

How did you get into designing Plus Size Fashion? What was the inspiration?Who would be your ideal client?

As women, we all like to look beautiful no matter what shape or size we are; when we look at our closet, we pick the outfit that makes us look most beautiful. Similarly, even I always wanted to look chic, and of course feel comfortable. But being a plus size, I had limitations. I could never go into a store and come out wearing the outfit I had liked! I had to customise it to my size and comfort! This process was cumbersome and after a while irritating and depressing! I had to pre-plan for every occasion and keep random outfits ready months in advance. And if there was a last minute theme at any party... Oops! I was in trouble. And then I had to adjust with whatever I had and end up looking out of place. I have been a plus size since childhood so I really wanted to do something about this for all the women who are my size and face similar situations every time they shop! This experience led me to the idea of creating a brand of western wear for plus size women.

What is your most proud accomplishment as a plus designer to date?

I'm quite incipient in my experience as a designer. But what I am really confident about is that my team and I have got the pulse of Indian body shapes in plus size. That is a big accomplishment, I feel.

What do you predict for the future of Plus Size Fashion?

In the past, only few plus size women would dare to wear westerns. If you would dress up boldly, there would be stories behind your back. It was uncomfortable to dress up and walk around. We had to always tone down. No bright colors, no short clothes, no sleeveless... the 'NO' list was on. But now we have a voice and we have no fear of 'log kya kahenge' or 'kaisa lagega'.  We are getting bolder.

We know the importance of inclusive collections. So why can't more designers make plus size ensembles?

I feel most designers see Plus Size as a niche market. They may feel there is not much creativity to showcase in plus size. Also, plus size is more of an emotion, than just a size. One needs to understand the sentiments behind it! I would say it needs to be dealt with a lot of sensitivity!

Personally- and as a designer- what does showcasing in Pune mean to you? How important a region is it?

Pune is a city that encourages startups and young entrepreneurs. It is a city that accepts different cultures, new trends and has a great sense of fashion. It is also a city I call home now.

What are you most looking forward to about Pune Fashion Week? What is your inspiration for this collection?

This is my launch collection and my inspiration is 'Self Love'. I have used silhouettes that accentuate our special curves, making every piece look chic and yet it is comfortable. The color of the season is green — the new shades are here to make a mark. There is minimal new-age embroidery to make the outfits stand out.

Do share three hottest plus-size styles and how we should wear or style it?

1.Unique Sleeves — sway your bell, flounce, or trumpet sleeve as it's our favourite style to flaunt. It's got bigger flairs than ever. Team them with fitted pants to give a sleek stylish look

2. Classic Button Up Shirts — A unique way to represent the formal look. Button Shirts are all time classics.

3. Power Shoulders — it's the season to expresses power and passion. Cold shoulders, off shoulder or one shoulder, a little skin show makes it sexy and appealing. Be it a dress or blouse, it will surely make you stand apart.

What are the other projects you're working on now and in the near future?

We are looking at bringing Plus Size designer wear across India.

On a lighter note.. what is your mantra to surviving Pune Fashion Week?

My mantra is to empower plus size women by letting them 'be themselves' so when you have a beautiful cause to your business you will always see people encouraging your endeavours!
