IN CONVERSATION WITH GEN NEXT RAHUL DASGUPTA

— JASMEEN DUGAL

Lakmé Fashion Week is a day away and excitement is building up, in particular to check out the Gen Next designers… the future of Fashion. Responsible Fashion is the need of the hour and these youngsters are trying to take it mainstream. Over to NIFT alumnus, menswear designer Rahul Dasgupta who is ''thrilled, overwhelmed and humbled'' to be among the rare coveted ones in the sea of aspirants.

"Based in Kolkata, I won the most creative and innovative design collection award for my graduation collection at NIFT. Post college, I freelanced as a stylist for a year and then joined Ruceru, a womenswear label. I have always aspired to launch my own menswear label some day which led me to launch my studio in August 2020. It's just been six months but it hasn't been easy. My love for fashion has always been there for me. I was a creative child but that time I couldn't think of building a career from my dreams of Fashion; it seemed like a farfetched dream, and moreover I did not have financial backup. So, I studied computer science because getting a job in IT was easy back then. Pretty soon, I knew this job was not for me. Finally, I took a call and left my well-paid job to follow my passion… by sending in my design application to NIFT. That's when I realized that the joy of creating something new cannot be replaced by anything else. That's how my journey with fashion started…

It's a dream for every aspiring designer to be a part of India's top fashion week. GenNext is the doorway. It has always been on my bucket list. I always dreamt of showcasing on the ramp and showing the world what I can do and GenNext made that possible. I was thrilled, overwhelmed, and humbled when I heard the news that I won GenNext. It was surreal. I don't think I have digested the fact that I got chosen and that I will be showcasing my debut collection in a few days. I am happy that I made it this far and hoping to only grow from here as it's quite interesting this time — two fashion giants are collaborating for one fashion week. It's a phygital edition so the chances of reaching out to a wider audience is much higher in comparison to other seasons. That said, I usually go with the flow. So the only thought that runs through my mind is that I must give my best shot for my debut collection on this prestigious platform. I am hoping my label will grow, will be noticed by the fashion industry… which has always been my dream..."
