IBFW CO-FOUNDER AND CEO PALLAV OJHA

— Jasmeen Dugal

India Beach Fashion Week is influenced by the beachside glamour that is a part and parcel of Goa — and it just grows stronger each season. This season, owing to the devastating outbreak of the pandemic, IBFW will be streaming live from Goa. In conversation with co-founder and CEO Pallav Ojha in the run-up to the first digital fashion week in the nation!

''Resort and swim wear are design categories that help designers express their individuality. The colours, surface ornamentation, fabrics and silhouettes have evolved and Indian art and culture is visible in most collections'' Pallav had explained during the last edition of India Beach Fashion Week in Goa.

This season, owing to the global pandemic, IBFW will be streaming live from Goa — showing masterpieces of late designer Wendell Rodricks, Ken Ferns and Nidhi Munim. ''We are living in a world with constant innovation and the online audience has to grow organically if this is to be a viable option for the industry. Although this season IBFW is streaming live, it is difficult to completely replace live shows. The best path is an omni- channel approach, plugged with immediate buying options from showcasing designers. This is very important as buying is very slow; moreover, buyers can't attend shows so we intend to make a digital capsule of all shows and send it to them. Basically, a look book and show video of each designer. Moving forward, key stakeholders could be physically present at curated shows with consumers and the rest of the world can watch the live streaming…''

The devastating effects of the pandemic was like watching the domino effect.''If we talk about retail, the sales have gone too low, as the sentiment to purchase is a bit low. People are more focused on essentials and it will take some time for things to return to normal.  Designers are facing issues of demand vs. supply as well as manpower due to skilled migrant workers going back home. And as far as fashion shows and events are concerned, there aren't any, so the entire segment of designers, models, technicians, choreographers and photographers need to get to work… it is over five months now! From day 1, we have believed that every crisis is an opportunity to create and innovate. So we are launching a fashion business platform ''IBFW — Empower'' to mentor, brand, fund, innovate, showcase and boost both retail and live events, to help the fashion industry with innovations and technology to sustain these trying times.''

Considering social distancing is the new normal and it’s hard to know when customers will feel safe to shop, what is the fit ire of his multi- designer store Como Collective, I ask? ''Our key focus is the e-store. We are relaunching the e-store in a few days — with a bang. This should help us sustain and revive the business. That said, we feel people would still want real retail therapy particularly for the category of brands and designers we have at Como Collective!''
