— Meher Castelino

She is the perfect model for her profession. Pretty, petite and smart as a button, Dr. Jaishree Sharad is the right mix of beauty with brains. With a list of Bollywood stars and celebs on her client list, she has been responsible for making people look their best and solved their skin problems. Busy travelling around the globe, giving talks and writing papers, it was a difficult task to pin this busy lady down for an exclusive chat for Explosive Fashion.

What are the most common skin problems women face and how to rectify them?

Pigmentation and acne are the most common issues women face. It is important to consult a dermatologist to find out the cause for both and get them treated. Sunscreen, vitamin C serums and tretinoin-based creams help for pigmentation. Salicylic acid based face wash, dairy-free diet and adapalene gels help for acne. Both problems also occur due to hormonal changes in the body, hence hormones in the blood should be checked.

You have many Bollywood clients. What are their common problems?

Acne is the most common problem as they have make-up on their face for long hours. This can clog pores and lead to whiteheads and blackheads.

Do you think good skin is inherited or does it come from good care?

20 per cent inherited, 80 per cent good skin care!

What is the simplest skin care routine one can follow?

Cleansing, moisturising and sun protection are three basic steps coupled with a healthy diet and healthy lifestyle. Avoid alcohol and smoking.

There are hundreds of skin care products in the world. How does one choose the right one?

It is important to know one’s skin type and choose a product accordingly. A good product should be non comedogenic (should not cause pimples), hypo- allergenic (should not cause allergies), and fragrance free. My book “Skin Talks” tells you how to know your skin type and deal with it.

What are the ’must have’ in beauty care products for every woman?

A good cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen, lip balm, make-up remover and under-eye serum!

What are the common mistakes people make when it comes to skin care?

They do not remove make-up at bedtime. They do not take care of their neck and hands. The face may look good but the hands and neck give away your age. They do not use a sunscreen saying it is sticky or white!

Are facials necessary and how are they helpful to the skin?

Facials help in cleansing skin. They do not have anti-ageing benefits but relax you and have a feel good factor.

At times, the wrong treatment causes a skin problem; how should one tackle it?

It is best to consult a dermatologist.

What are the main reasons for skin problems?

Stress, sunlight, lack of hygiene, smoking, tight clothes, unhealthy food, lack of sleep and wrong make-up products are the main reasons for skin problems.

Does climate, stress, bad skin care and bad health cause acne or is it just hereditary?

Acne occurs due to hormonal imbalance in the body. It is not hereditary though people with a family history have a greater predisposition. Stress and bad skin care are certainly aggravating factors!

Some skins age faster than others any reason for that even if both women have similar lifestyles?

Genes are the cause for this.

Many women cannot get rid of acne even when they are in their 40’s… what is the cause for that?

Adult acne — as it is called — occurs due to hormonal changes in the body. It increases due to stress.

Fair skins are desired by most Indian women. Do whitening creams really work?

Some whitening creams which contain Vitamin C, Niacinamide and botanicals like kojic acid, arbutin and liqorice are safe to use. But some creams may have steroids or hydroquinone; while steroids can be harmful instantly, long term use of hydroquinone can cause allergies and darkening of skin too.

Will skin return to its original colour once the whitening creams are stopped?

Yes!

At what age should women use anti-ageing creams and serums?

Usually after the age of 35.

Do these anti-ageing products delay the ageing process or is it just a fad?

Anti-ageing products with coenzyme Q10, retinoic acid, glycolic acid, lactobionic acid, peptides and hyaluronic acid do help in delaying ageing by plumping up the skin and make new collagen.

What are the pros and cons of Botox?

Botox is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles and creates a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. It is used to remove frown lines between the eyebrows, crows feet around the eyes, horizontal forehead wrinkles, Bunny Lines on the nose, downturned corners of the lips, neck bands and horizontal lines, chin creasing and to reduce broad jaws and improve facial contour. It is also used to reduce excessive sweating on palms and underarms and for the treatment of migraines. The results are seen within 3-4 days but the effect is best seen after 7-15 days of injections. About 4-6 months after the first treatment, the effects gradually wear off. The problem is the effect wears off in 4-6months and the Botox treatment has to be repeated. If the doctor who is injecting isn’t well trained, mistakes may happen. So make sure one goes to a qualified and well-trained dermatologist or plastic surgeon. Do not get obsessed and go overboard with the treatment!! Too much can lead to loss of expression lines and give a plastic face. The aim should be to soften the lines and look natural.

Today girls in their teens are going for Botox;  is it advisable?

Girls who are above 20 years of age and have a very broad jaw/or face due to strong masseter muscle can take Botox injections to reduce the size of the jaw and make it more oval or rounded from an existing square jaw. I wouldn't recommend Botox for other indications in youngsters.

When is the right age to go for Botox?

Botox is given to erase wrinkles. It is best to start after the age of 35 but if wrinkles are too deep and one is in the beauty industry, then you may take it after the age of 30. As far as USA FDA is concerned, Botox cosmetic can be given after the age of 18.
