DESIGN DIARY: RITU KUMAR

Padmashri Ritu Kumar's collections showcase the astringent futurism that characterises her label steeped in ancient textile traditions. Here, the designer speaks to us on the potential of Rajasthan Heritage Week, social responsibility of Fashion and her collection inspired by sand dunes.

''As part of our CSR, I work on a few revivalist collections each year. We are taking up Rajasthan for the next year. Last year was Banaras and Ikats so it fits in very well with a social responsibility theme. India is unique in the sense that we have an organic craft-oriented fashion identity, one which the rest of the world has lost. Continued recognition of the craftsmen and renewing their skills in a contemporary fashion for the Indian and International market, keeps the crafts relevant and refreshed; it also focusses attention on states which have a rich repertoire like Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat. Recognition of these rich textile crafts come under the brand umbrella of luxury. Crafts are necessarily luxury in today's world of mass production. These are heritage crafts and do come in the bespoke area sometimes — be it weaving, embroideries or tie dyes. ''
