DESIGN DIARY: BIBI RUSSELL

"When I heard about Rajasthan Heritage Week, I thought of all the weavers and crafts people of Rajasthan. It is a tribute and recognition of the potential of the artisans by the Chief Minister, Vasundhara Raje and I'm absolutely thrilled with the concept and her vision to bring their work to the mainstream. The show will give a platform to the weavers and crafts people of the state wherein leading designers would work with the local crafts and exhibit their collection on the ramp" famed Bangladesh-based designer Bibi Russel explains as the Pink City gears up for Rajasthan Heritage Week. "I've worked with indigenous crafts across the globe and am certain the show will immensely benefit both the weavers and the designers. While the weavers will learn to incorporate new trends and designs in their weaves, the designers working with them will be compelled to think of using their magical work in future collections. There is a lot of potential here. India is a storehouse of crafts that are native to each region. The success of this event will showcase to the other states as well as countries how to optimise local expertise in the contemporary context. The objective is to revive and promote local crafts, some of which are on the verge of extinction, even though they have a huge potential to be recognised globally. The way these crafts are showcased here will influence designers globally to use them in their collections leading to development of these communities through Fashion. What can be better for the craftsmen if their art comes under the ‘fashion’ umbrella and is recognised across the globe? So, as one of the participants at the RHW, my endeavour is to bring out the best of Rajasthan. Every little detail my show exhibits is native to Rajasthan and the trends I foresee here are Khadi as the fabric of the future and Kota Doria saris. I will be showcasing both in my collection."
