ACCIDENTAL HEROES

— JASMEEN DUGAL

I've never been a fan of Danielle Steel because I'm not a romantic. But that sure changed once I read her new release, 'Accidental Heroes' — a racy thriller about a packed commercial flight that could be on the verge of hijack and crash, due to a deeply troubled passenger on board.

The novel begins at the busy JFK Airport in New York and the plot revolves around three people — Bernice Adams, Ben Waterman and Helen Smith. Bernice, the security checkpoint officer finds a suspicious postcard and alerts senior security personnel Ben, who investigates it and alerts Homeland Security. Ben is convinced someone on Helen's San Francisco-bound flight sent the ominous message indicative of crashing into and blowing up the Golden Gate Bridge. The author provides a dramatic hour-by-hour account as the profiles of passengers and crew on board is investigated, and it's a race against time to find out who is planning an act of terror in the skies so an attempt could be made to save innocent passengers on board. Helen, the decorated Air Force pilot reeling from her husband's violent death in Iraq, is forced to deal with the threat in her aircraft and takes the readers on the ride fraught with tension, drama and danger.

Accidental Heroes is a heart-stopping thriller about ordinary men and women, like you and I, who board a flight to San Francisco, unaware that it would turn out to be a dangerous journey they would never forget. The way Steel masterfully pens the narrative makes it a page-turner. I was reading it aboard a flight and didn't put it down till we landed… but err, on second thoughts, it may not be a good idea to read this aboard a flight! I was on tenterhooks! Yes, it is that realistic and edge-of-the-seat gripping! Thriller aside- it is the message of 'Accidental Heroes' that stayed with me long after I had closed the book — heroes aren't born, they're made. Everyone — from the pilot to the crew, the airport personnel and Homeland Security — worked on their gut feel to stop a potential tragedy of huge proportion.
