A TRIP TO THE DESIGN CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

La vita e' bella — Life Is Beautiful!

It is a feeling that cannot be expressed in words!! The students at GD Goenka School of Fashion and Design looked happy and super excited. Happy because a promise made to them was coming true and excited as they were going to be in Milan — the design capital of the world! It was their time to live it! Live it big!!

When initially briefed about going to Milan one of them said 'it just did not seem true because as a design student it's a lifetime ambition and a dream that's way too far from reality.' So when the second semester students given such an opportunity one could see them dancing and jumping.. screaming with delight and what not! And the excitement was building up. Ha! Ha! And this time it just could not be contained. While boarding the flight to Milan it seemed like a young Indian band of 18 rock stars were out there and ready to swing it. The flight ascended and so did the tempo! Soon the round of stories began from home-made food to ready-made meals to shopping for shoes and clothes.. it was all there. Their bags were full. Initially it seemed like an endless journey — some enjoyed the in-flight movies and played games.. others chatted and a few slept.. and soon the flight landed at Malpensa Airport in Milan. This eclectic mix of creative individuals from various streams i.e. Fashion Design and Communication Design.. Product Design and Interior Design were all set.

The classes began early the following morning with an introduction from one of the senior Professors at Politecnico di Milano. A major part of the study tour was a design workshop with Professor Roberto Boni and his industrial designer assistant Filippo. It's really amazing to see how young minds act and react when they are set free in a new environment. These students were given a project to design a space — complete with graphics and staff uniforms — which would promote the identity of a University to a visitor. As practical exposure the students visited a famous interior design studio in Milan — Storage Associati — and were given a presentation by its owner Marco Donati. From the students' perspective the experience in Milan i.e. attending classes and then going around the city on weekends and interacting with Professors and Italian students exposed them to a hitherto unknown world.. a world where creative energies are at their highest levels!
