A CONVERSATION WITH RINA DHAKA

One of the pioneering designers in the Eighties, Rina Dhaka transformed the Capital into an epicentre of avant-garde fashion. While a brooding, intellectual quality evolved as the hallmark of designers, Dhaka balanced it with a sexy, stylish aesthetic that arrested attention and held it. Is it any wonder then her clientele includes Naomi Campbell and Uma Thurman, to name just a few? In conversation with the designer in the run-up to her much-awaited show at Pune Fashion Week.

''In my earlier days, striking a balance between creativity and wearability was my constant challenge. Creativity was all that mattered — wearability didn't matter as much. Over the years, with the experience of running a business and the effect of commerce on the industry, a designer can no longer discount the importance of wearability in each ensemble. Sets, costume, make-up, jewellery, accessories all help build up the theatrical character.'' This as what the designer had shared with me during a recent conversation.

And she is pretty much in the same frame of mind. ''As a designer, one gives importance to the creative but without the commercial, sadly there can be no trade, leading to disappointment! My advice to my younger self? I wish I was addicted to another, more peaceful trade and never cared bout anything!!'' Speaking of Pune Fashion Week, she reflects, ''Season after season, I strive to change, to refresh styles from our last collection. Pune is an important city for Fashion. In my narrative, real women walk the ramp. The collection is threaded with glamour, delicacy, elegance and silhouettes are very different!'' Ssshh, more on that later! I dont want to reveal looks so early! As a parting shot before boarding a flight, she grins ''My survival kit is sneakers and tracks to run and squat, cappuccino — and I always miss the water!''
