VARUN BAHL
Runway Report

Flowers and romance have emerged as major themes at PCJ Delhi Couture Week.. as seen at Varun Bahl presented by Audi India. The charming designer's not averse to seduction but he does have a serious sensibility—urban and sensible but all the while chic. With the bird as a recurring motif that symbolically questioned the essence of haute couture in India.. Bahl established his codes of making couture practical and wearable for day as much as eveningwear.

He favored the sari-gown (perfect for the global Indian who doesn't have to worry about the intricacies of the sari) and showed some of the best we've seen anyplace. This season he showed them tapered in gorgeous shades of ochre yellow and pistachio.. fuchsia and sindoor.. embellished with subtle intricate embroidery. Bahl loves a bit of drama and achieved it tonight with motifs of floral fields and birds in flight on high slit skirts with net leggings and anarkalis crafted from bubble crepe and raw silk.. wool crepe and organza—that's where the seduction came in. Both had a high-fashion quotient without looking trendy: a boon to clients in the rarified world of couture. A hot-seller!
