Runway Report

The miniature loom Vaishali Shadangule gifted me, deeply symbolic of her single-minded focus, occupies pride of place in my room. The revivalist designer's focus on breathing life into near-extinct weaves has organically increased their reach and her hands-on approach to keep it alive is visible in her effort to pick clusters and live with them. 'Since distances are long and there is no communication, I stay or re-visit till they prepare samples. During this process, I get understand the textile better which helps to bring out its uniqueness. Initially it was tough to sustain business but it's crucial to create sustainable livelihood for those who are left to safeguard its continuity,'' she had explained to me.

Her determination to create a success story for weavers in five states resulted in a stunning show at Lakme Fashion Week. Shadangule's expertise in designing globally relevant looks from our indigenous weaves was visible in each look of 'Madanottsava' crafted with Maheshwari silk; Khunn; Kanchipuram silk and Banarsi brocade. Her collections have always been a study of rigorous cut, detailing and fabric manipulation, which was once again evident this season. Cording, at the apex of the collection, appeared in cholis, blouses, saris, kurtas and batwing sleeved tops. Hot-sellers were 3D textured cord bodice and her signature accordion- inspired pin- tucked cholis. I find it remarkable how she creates the modernity, the airiness and the immediateness of ensembles handcrafted with centuries-old weaves. The effect is quietly impressive and this she'll continue to have buyers queuing up!

As each look came out I recalled a conversation with her, ''In some regions, young weavers have understood the importance of revivalism and are making an effort to market it properly and make a living through retail. They are contemporising the textile to the extent it doesn't lose its traditional value. Now is the time where a genuine initiative from the government and the fashion fraternity can take it to the next level.'' Salut.
