Runway Report

The miniature loom Vaishali Shadangule gifted me, deeply symbolic of her single-minded focus, occupies pride of place in my room. The revivalist designer's focus on breathing life into near-extinct weaves has organically increased their reach and her hands-on approach to keep it alive is visible in her effort to pick a cluster each season and live with them.

''Since distances are long and there is no communication, I stay or re-visit till they prepare samples. During this process, I get attached with the textile and understand it better which helps to bring out its uniqueness. Initially it was tough to sustain business through this methodology, but like the weavers, I am tied by the thread of passion,'' she explains. ''This season, I chose Guledgudda, Karnataka for its centuries old weave 'Khun'. It's tough to find weavers of the original Khun so it's crucial to create sustainable livelihood for those who are left to safeguard its continuity.''

Her determination to create a success story for weavers in Guledgudda resulted in a stunning showing on the first day of Lotus MakeUp India Fashion Week. Shadangule's expertise in crafting globally relevant design from these indigenous weaves was visible in each look. I loved the bone-structured capes and how she used the lightweight fabric to design cocktail dresses and saris. I found it remarkable how she created the modernity, the airiness and the immediateness of the ensembles with centuries-old weaves. The effect was quietly impressive and this talented lady will continue to have buyers queuing up!

As I walked out of her showing, I recalled a conversation with her, ''At some of the regions, young weavers have understood the importance of revivalism and are making an effort to market it properly and make a living through exhibits and retail. They are contemporising the textile to the extent it doesn't lose its traditional value. Now is the time where a genuine initiative from the government and the fashion fraternity can take it to the next level.'' Salut.
