SWAPNIL SHINDE

Runway Report

"I was thinking of the sound waves from mobile phones, internet, modems and music," said Swapnil Shinde before he was dragged off by the choreographer. Moments later, his futuristic vision was on the catwalk: the cocktail dress with PVC rolls; the silver-edged mini with leather straps; the multi-wing white shirt with a plastic covered skirt; the canary yellow jumpsuit; and the mini with plastic rolls that transformed into a dramatic fountain at the front. Within seconds, these refined precision-judged looks were sending chills through a rapt audience. Was it worth the wait after the two back-to-back showings? Without a doubt! The final white halter gown with space age tubular embellishment proved Shinde could create magic with any medium.

Like last season's catwalk triumph, this collection will reset new age theatrical fashion. There was no feel of a lurch as these space-age ideas have been hinted at in his previous collections—in addition to the attenuated line and his skill with draping. With this collection, he leapt ahead. It is true that thoughts of robo-women have been seen on the global catwalks but it takes talent to turn a reference into something that is light years from appropriation.
