Runway Report

At a moment when the world is poised for change, it would be uplifting that a showing might offer additional pointers. From the first look, it was apparent Gen Next Designer Shivaji Dutta was operating resourcefully within his frame of reference. A devotee of Mahatma Gandhi's guidance 'Be the change you want to see', sustainability was one of the points he made with the usage of both fresh and recycled fabrics. Layered shirts and outerwear were worn over lean trousers or skirts—with leather detailing in geometric shapes—while the earthy palette underscored the gravity of the theme.

''I was nervous as this was my debut at Lakme Fashion Week, which is a great platform for aspiring designers. Many things change midway through the designing process. Sometimes the designs are effective in conveying a message but are not commercially viable. A lot depends on the designer to give importance to each dimension so that it is acceptable but does not loses its catwalk appeal. I guess it is an ongoing process until you reach the bar you set for yourself,'' the young designer told me before the showing. An impressive debut, overall.
