Runway Report

It's been a rare review of Padmashri Ritu Kumar's sub- brand 'Ritu Kumar Label' that hasn't mentioned the modern, globally relevant design that characterises her aesthetic steeped in centuries-old textile tradition. This mix has produced beautifully elegant collections favoured by both mothers and daughters in any part of the globe; there's nothing more important to the designer than giving clientele ensembles with artisanal handwork that they now expect, and had no trouble finding, at Lakme Fashion Week.

The sleek fast-paced showing 'Structured Pastoral' displayed country- style looks crafted with tulle, chiffon, silk, leather and knits. There was something beautiful for all occasions. I loved the lightweight layered looks like the sheer dress worn over shorts or pleated dress with tulle overlay. Or the maroon lace dress — perfect for high tea. The louche, luxe effect remained consistent as the gamut of looks ran from printed floral pinafore, frilled panelled dresses, embroidered jacket with stretch pants and metallic fringed short bolero where the exceptional craftsmanship for which Ritu Kumar is renowned, was on display. Tara Sutaria closed the showing in a stunning black, embroidered halter, mini pinafore over a white shirt, accessorised with a leather belt with long beaded strands.

My last thoughts as I walked out of the showing was that it all amounted to a smorgasbord of separates from which to pick and choose; clearly, Ritu Kumar would never limit her ladies. Salut.
