RITU BERI
Runway Report

"Khadi is an ancient pre-Independance handspun fabric. My endeavour is to give it a makeover, by crafting contemporary silhouettes, so it can carve a niche in global fashion," Ritu Beri had told me when she was appointed advisor to Khadi and Village Industries Commission for the promotion of khadi. Today, she has over a decade of experience in Fashion, designing for international A-list including Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, Nicole Kidman and Ivana Trump. So, it's no wonder there was excitement about her opening show at Delhi Times Fashion Week conceptualised and executed by Talent Factory.

As the first looks came out, it was apparent she is no stranger to handloom. Thematically, a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi — even though I found it too theatrical to send a little boy dressed like Gandhi Ji walking down the ramp (!!) — the role of khadi in crafting a demi-couture line of intricately embellished saris, lehengas, tunics and kurta pyjamas, was genius. My take? It was brilliance, particularly, the role of khadi in crafting demi-couture- accessorised with turbans and enhanced with bridal jewellery- so young people appreciate the versatility of khadi to craft relevant, ensembles for occasion and bridal wear. The show closed with dignitaries walking the ramp...
