RAHUL MISHRA
Runway Report

One line sums up Rahul Mishra Fall 2015 — individuality and the global village. He made good on that promise: the looks didn't feel connected to a particular region and were in line with his signatures: uplifting craftsmen and creating a contemporary collection with intricately hand-embroidered textiles. Yes, Mishra brought the potential of people, process and craft across villages of the world by using wool extracted in Gurrundah — a village in Sydney — and gave it shape and form in a remote village in West Bengal.

'The Village' is part-art, part fashion. The village Mishra had grown up in incubated an acute sensitivity to craft and craftsmen. "This collection creates a graphical sketchbook of the images of a village I grew up in, with an ecosystem of peaceful sustainable coexistence" he confirmed. "My garments bring to life finest fibres, weaves and craft techniques practiced in villages across the world. Return to the land, is the driving force that marks this collection, an outcome of concerted efforts to rehabilitate craftsmen back in to their space from urban dwellings, to take a new step in producing slow fashion." A beautiful sentiment… sincerity and creative genius of Rahul Mishra's kind is a true rarity. There were more than a few terrific pieces here, but what really impressed was the designer's attention to detail and the way he had stamped his crafts-steeped label with an urbane identity.

About those pieces: so intense was the theme and its presentation that it demanded simplicity from the silhouettes. Tending toward long and lean, cocktail dresses, jackets, tops and skirts were spliced with translucent panels at the midriff. Sporty, zipper detailing gave an urbane polished finish to the looks. Delicate embroidered patterns appeared, including a drawing of a village, moonlit foliage and appliquéd birds—masterful in its embroidery but quiet in its palette running the gamut from pristine white to midnight black. Truly Rahul Mishra's mastery of his craft is so complete that each collection is more enthralling than the one before.
