PERO BY ANEETH ARORA
Runway Report

A new mood began at péro this season, with the most confident collection Aneeth Arora has designed to date. Steeped in military inspiration, the designer explored stories of people and their alter lives although she didn't hew to any one theme. Instead, she drew on miscellaneous references, and gave them a twist and an update. All the while keeping androgyny in focus without forgetting the essential péro girl — one who would wear a vintage lacy chemise under a structured khaki jacket!

From the first look drum-rolled by the 27TH Battalion of Madras Regiment, a rigorous masculine precision persisted in the tailoring which balanced out the frill. The collection is austere yet playful, keeping the label’s signature style alive. The péro girl is an ingenue, one who looks as though she's picked out double breasted jackets and slouchy sweaters, khaki caps, combat shoes and rucksacks at military stores mixed magpie-style with floral dresses, handwoven capes, denim, pashmina jackets and knitted skirts. This was cross-pollinated with brass buttons, handwoven woollen checks and indigo resist block printed khakis. She gave military aesthetics a stylish upgrade which is a better way of handling references than a straightforward homage; we loved the way she replicated the military style of uniforms with badges, in this case a pero-badge — zardozi floral motif! The feel was straightforward without sacrificing youthful femininity.

As the show wound to a close with the playful appearance of Princess Pea, the underlying theme was perceptive; the péro girl is the subject who takes charge rather than the object who simply looks pretty — a welcome empowerment. What did I really like about this show? Few models carried beautiful wooden Etikoppaka dolls handcrafted by the local craftspeople of Andhra Pradesh while smaller versions lined the catwalk! It was in my goodie bag too!!
