NARENDRA KUMAR AHMED
Runway Report

Narendra Kumar Ahmed's off-site show at Lakme Fashion Week reminded me of a report in style.com, ''In the Seventies, it was like the street had taken over the runway. Couples and groups of girls walked arm and arm in conversation, or they danced—the runway was like a big party.'' I was brought out of my reverie by a broadcast: 'Ladies and gentlemen! The next local leaves in two minutes. Get aboard for a fashion journey with 'Sounds of Mumbai.'' Under the canopied venue of Tote was a replica of a train with 'coolies' showing guests to their seats while the designer served them chai!

Kumar has proved how far he can push it with iconoclastic fever and he was up to his devices again with raw silk, tussore, organic cotton, silk and georgette draped jackets with fine detailing, embroidered georgette and jersey kaftans with looped hemlines, tussore silk textured skirts with 3D appliqué and Lurex cutwork dresses. The presentation was taken to the theatrical max—amid the train attendants and sports dresses—there were the organza, taffeta and satin sculpted gowns he confects so well... with low necklines, ruffles and skirts with exposed seams. The finale lime and yellow organza wave gown with sheer skirt and curved panels evoked a sing-along to 'Yeh Hai Mumbai Meri Jaan!'
