JAYA MISRA

Runway Report

Fashion is changing its mood. It is moving forward and there is a undercurrent of pride in our heritage. After proudly watching the showing by Jaya Misra at Swabhoomi, I summarised it with one sentence — fashion for peace! With all the revolutions happening around the globe, the Kolkata-based designer explained the inspiration of her showing titled 'Freedom And Peace'. ''As the world reels under violence and terrorism, there is a critical need to seek peace both within ourselves and in our lives. We in India should stand united in the war against terror and vow to make peace a part and parcel of our daily life and in our fashion statement.'' I can only agree to that.

The peace-and-love vibes were intentional as the showing channeled a message: freedom. "We believe in a fantastic future" she said, acknowledging that current circumstances make a positive outlook an imperative. Fashion can't change the world but even a nihilist would be hard-pressed to deny the sheer beauty of the flared kameez, angrakha, dhoti pant and sari. It was also a collection with a conscience, crafted with natural fabrics like khadi, cotton, raw tussar and muga silk—sans any embellishment other than tricolour detailing—accessorised with Nehru caps and poet jholas. Yes, an emotionally-charged feeling of freedom reigned.
