HEMANT TREVEDI
Runway Report

Hemant Trevedi, Fashion Director, Sheetal. Before that, fashion editor of a men’s magazine, creator of award winning fashion campaigns, mentor to designers Anita Dongre and Neeta Lulla and beauty queens Aishwarya Rai and Diana Hayden, among other milestones! Yet, so humble, polite and charming. So it's no wonder I once again felt unbridled excitement about his show at Rajasthan Heritage Week.

'Modern Mahatma', in association with Khadi Board, Government of Rajasthan and Prasad Bidapa, highlighted the beauty and magnificence of khadi and vegetable-dyed block prints. The fusion line hit a glamorous note as he sent out sleek layered looks crafted with indigo-dyed handloom khadi and accessorised with topis, sling bags and round spectacles. It was all about oscillating between the flamboyant and the reserved, the elaborate and the fragile, the debutante and the ageless sophisticate… for whom the designer sent out a melange of swirling skirts and short shorts, creatively draped saris and slim pants—all layered with stunning outerwear.

Personally, the indigo-dyed bikini and shorts worn with a floor-length coat was theatrically stunning as was Deepti Gujral in a modern take on the ghagra, holding a laathi. The last thought I was left with, was that the showing, a beautiful tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, had effectively unveiled a layer of the artistic cultural history of Rajasthan. Without a doubt, it was a line of buy-off-the-catwalk thought-through pieces. Hemant Trevedi is all about ensembles that walk the line between normal, everyday wear and the spectacular, and with this collection he navigated further toward a phase in which luxury and practicality entwine… evoking a spontaneous standing ovation as the showing closed. Salut!
