Runway Report

NIFT alumnus Gaurav Jai Gupta studied Woven Textiles in Chelsea College of Art and Design London alongside an exchange programme in Atelier Nationle Art Texiles, Paris which exposed him to contemporary handwoven textiles. He was then commissioned by Central Saint Martins School of Art and Design to trend forecast for British magazine, Preview. In 2007, he debuted at craft show Origin: The London Craft Fair under his label, Akaaro. Since, he is renowned for handloom weaves crafted with copper wire, stainless steel, wool, silk and fashioned into wearable silhouettes!!

So, it was no wonder there was a stir among editors at Amazon India Fashion Week as we waited for his show to begin! From the first look, it was evident the capsule collection would be a hot-seller! Using handwoven fabrics, the designer focused on straightforward silhouettes, layering and textured prints — in a muted color palette. Jackets, fluid dresses, pants, kurtas and blouses… the textured, beautifully draped wearable garments were indicative of the need to move beyond embellishment. Anyone with an appreciation for handwoven garments, without too much fuss, would love. Which label but Akaaro, could make a real wardrobe look this desirable? I can't wait for this collection to hit the racks!
