GAURAV GUPTA
Runway Report

This season designers asked themselves, what constitutes couture? For them, the answer is not a singular interest in profit margins but a sense of freedom that connects with people who wear their garments. Gaurav Gupta's show at PCJ Delhi Couture Week was a paean to all of those things but chiefly to freedom. There was no way I could slot the ensembles into the general spectrum of the season and as the first model walked out there was an audible gasp from the guests which prompted me to recalled his heartfelt admission: ''My technique is the zoom-in view. There is so much detailing to every single design, cut and drape that at times I'm reminded of a fly's eyes.''

To believe intuitively in what you are doing—and to connect with guests on that level—implies business and fashion are not discordant. There were some gorgeous pieces that focused on volume control and movement—a sequinned sari with a sheer corset was at once vintage and modern while evening gowns with handcrafted embroidery or zari hinted at the belle époque. As the looks crafted from lace, georgette and jersey continued—the black-on-nude lace gown and the beaded sari gown i.e. continuous sinuous lines with extempore drapes—it was clear this collection would be a hot-seller among ladies who delight in experimental silhouette. A fitting end to the show was Kalki Koechlin in a high-slit gold sequinned gown.

In a way, a perfect metaphor for the collection: celebratory and redefining!
