ASMITA MARWAH

Runway Report

Asmita Marwah feels Goa has a soul like no other place; it is pure, magical, mystical and inspiring. To her, it's a home away from home and she's radiant with anticipation before her showing. "Resort and resort bridal is important for us as youngsters are opting for destination weddings with friends and family instead of hosting a crowd they barely know at their wedding. Beach destinations are popular and it makes sense to design collections for this segment" she smiles and adds "I hope we'll have more buyers this time as the success of a fashion week comes down to sales."

Right from the look she sent out, the thought that did cross my mind was that there is no limit to the power of fashion and Marwah is setting her sights on building a brighter and infinitely greener future by using organic dyes and natural fabrics with hand-stitched finish. "The Bindu" — steeped in inspiration from the paintings of iconic artist Raza — was an intensely personal theme. "The Bindu — or the epicentre — symbolises the seed, bearing the potential of all life. It is the source of all energy and is infinite" she had explained. In sync with this, the silhouettes were relaxed drapes, moulding itself around the body yet giving it space, crafted from cotton nets, chanderi, voile, viscose and khadi using fabric manipulation and a restrained color story of ivory, red and black.

This was a grounded collection, a sophisticate's compendium, giving the definitive word on kerchief hemlines with rows of tassels ending in a dramatic 'bindu' which gave the collection its identity; on nodding to men's crushed harem pants and lungis worn with white shirts sporting bold calligraphy. What really prompted pin drop silence was the regal, quiet entry of newly wed couple Anjala Zaveri in a crop top and lehenga and Tarun Arora in red harem pants and a white calligraphy-print shirt. I have known Tarun for years and the complete transformation in demeanour stunned and thrilled me. He could have been brand ambassador… he looked so good. That’s not all! Guests erupted into cheers as Rana Daggubati strutted down the ramp in black harem pants, acid-green panelled kurta and dupatta. Stunning in its simplicity! A telling reaction to this collection was the instant straw poll going on among guests as we walked out of the show. Asking each other what they liked best, everyone had a different answer. And that's the way it was: There was not one look but a spectrum of equally stunning looks for many of us to feel like ourselves in. Asmita Marwah's genius is that she holds the mirror up to that reality. Applause.
