ASA KAZINGMEI
Runway Report

''… subtle elements of my lifestyle which thrills and pleases me to the core… when I let down my hair and bang my head to the raw sound of rock- metal music… a man geared up on studded leather jacket and lacing up combat boots… with striking thunder-like sound of a 1000cc ride…

This is who I am.''

That- in a nutshell- describes Asa Kazingmei. The man, the designer. For Lakme Fashion Week, the fast-paced fierce show where he showcased studded, textured, painted leather tapped into the biker activewear trend. The tightness and rigor in the presentation was exceptional from the hair and make-up, the wild pollution face masks and the bold surface technique i.e. studs, chains, leather strips and handpainted animals. The contrast of texture, tone and surface had a dark intensity — a black and white patched jacket worn with textured slim pants, laced up combat boots, had a graphic punch.

All of his looks had a goth attitude—but minimal goth. Which is a good thing, as Asa's aesthetic is luxe-level, and these pieces are designed to be keepers than seasonal fashion. What wowed me was the way the simplicity of silhouette and gothic pragmatism added a fierce touch of visual assertiveness, which made for appealing pieces like jeans with multiple pockets and zippers worn with a black shirt; the dungaree with studs, chains, flap pockets on the legs, texturing on the torso and lapels; trousers with frayed patches on the legs, ribbed insets and leather strips.

Along with each look, what sucked me in was the spontaneous energy of the showing. It doesn't happen that often and it was uplifting. It was unique, intense and personal. That much was clear from the treatment that traditional biker-chic codes received. Yet each piece was very, very wearable. And, his showstoppers — Prathamesh Maulingkar in a military-style leather jacket; Nikhil Chinapa in a handpainted biker jacket and Gurmeet Choudhary in a denim biker jacket and leather pants — was visually arresting. Makes you wonder, what will he take on next?
