ANJU MODI
Runway Report

''Draupadi is the compelling inspiration behind this collection.. portraying different aspects of her life as depicted in the Mahabharata. The show is divided into various acts and each section will focus on specific colors and techniques resonating the essence of that theme'' Anju Modi told us days before her showing at PCJ Delhi Couture Week and it was awe-inspiring to see the extravagant set and catwalk in which the theme (and guests' ease to study garments) played out. Anticipation was thick in the air as the showing began as fans of her couture are acquainted with her strengths of development work in craft, intense research and modern cuts.

With classical dancers between each sequence to play out the narrative, the first segment celebrated 'Marriage to Pandavas' with festive colors which accentuated romanticism and magnificence. Transitioning to 'Game of Dice' shades of ash, indigo and wine reflected the dilemma within Draupadi and culminated with her 'Devotion' to Lord Krishna with delicate blush and ivory. Despite all the trappings, the collection boils down to desirable items like corsets and lehengas.. bandhgalas and smoking jackets (with a luxe brooch). I was astonished to read a former editor blogging 'the only disappointment were the dancers' as I agree with Anju Modi that one should appreciate the dancers' value in playing out the narrative and It was remarkable how their performance had captured the intense research, the creativity and the classicism of her work. This was not any ordinary show!!

There were sublime moments that coupled wearability with a touch of quirk like a dupatta draped over menswear and even though she employed block printing and kalamkari.. badla and zardorsi it was done in a subtle urbane manner. The thought that stayed with me as we walked out of the show was that Anju Modi had established a sort of call and response between looks such as those and others like the heavily embellished red and tangerine lehenga that closed the show with an almost austere undercurrent. It's the designer's mastery of both extravagance and ascetic that's the real showstopper.
