ANJU MODI
Runway Report

One of the joys of Anju Modi's showcase is the introduction it gives you to a world you know nothing about. 'Sunehri Kothi' at FDCI India Couture Week was an insight into miniature art of sixteenth century Kishangarh, which Princess Vaishnavi Kumari of Kishangarh acquainted her with, reflecting on virtues of chivalry and honor that Rajputana culture is renowned for. All of this—in a globally relevant, modern mould that would be a millennial bride's dream.

As the first looks came out, the only word that came to mind was 'stunning'. Each detail—well researched—resurrected the art and craft, beauty and regality of Rajasthan. Here, it was angrakhas, lehengas, saris—crafted with diaphanous hand-woven fabrics, intricately embellished with vintage embroideries lifted with zardozi—a deed revivalists would applaud. Glamour was brought in by beautiful showstopper Dia Mirza in a multicolored bridal lehenga with a ghunghat covering her face till she reached the end of the catwalk. With a maang tikka, nath and uncut diamond choker, she was a picture-perfect Indian bride!

As I walked out of the show, I thought of a conversation with the couturier. ''I've traveled to various villages not only within India but across countries. I'm deeply inspired by the cultural evolution I've witnessed in these places. We need to realise we are not most knowledgeable; we derive from ancient civilisations. Centuries old epics and vedantas have had a great impact on me. These are the kind of things that form the core of my creative thinking. I blend that with a modern outlook and it reflects in my design process.''
