Runway Report

Anjalee and Arjun opened Laconic 2019 — the inaugural showing of Fashion Design Council of Rajasthan, at the iconic Jai Mahal Palace, Jaipur. As the first looks came out, it reminded me of a statement Anjalee had made during our chat earlier that eve, ''I don't dress socialites, I dress stars!'' Well, it was clearly evident that this collection highlights the duo's alchemical knack for transforming chiffon, Banarasi and velvet into singular designs integrated with the codes of couture. And, that, set the tone for the showcase.

The show had a stately cadence.  The saris, lehengas, anarkali suits and evening gowns were so spectacular and theatrical that defining them as sumptuous would be an understatement. I loved the sarees with jewelled bustiers. ''A blouse adds character to the outfit and speaks volumes of the wearer's style. We always pay extra attention to it because it has the power to make or break an ensemble'' Anjalee explained backstage. The painstaking attention to detail was evident in the bejewelled borders, the intricate threadwork and the Renaissance motifs in the chiffon sarees and lehengas. And, tulle and cancan was used as an accent, to celebrate the magic of extravagance and lightness.

My last thoughts as it drew to a close was that the duo had given the couture narrative a hint of flamboyance. There was a compelling extravagance in all ensembles and I had a feeling that for Anjalee Arjun this wasn't only a showing of garments; they were presenting a ceremony. It certainly had the creativity, theatricality and boldness.
