ANAMIKA KHANNA
Runway Report

There was real anticipation for Anamika Khanna at PCJ Delhi Couture Week. The real guiding principle of her collections is its craftsmanship and that is what grounds Anamika Khanna as a couturier. "This takes time.. all of this work" was the thought that crossed my mind when I took in the first look. "It is fashion that is specialist and creative and bespoke." Theatrical maybe (set against the backdrop of a forest-inspired set) but in terms of the man-hours involved and the handcrafted techniques and the level of skill shown.. nothing comes close.

As the show progressed there was something respectful about the process of breathing life into traditional Indian styles like chikankari that one could mistake for handmade lace and the skirts inspired by a Maharashtrian sari.. the dupatta styled as a cape and the maang-tika given a modern spin — and the results were breath-taking. "I don't want to adhere to set norms of dress in India. I am looking to push boundaries beyond. my craft base remains Indian but the look belongs anywhere in the world. For example I've tried to present chikankari as lace. We took a base fabric and developed it" she said. And it worked in a courageous grown-up way!! In keeping with a nod to heritage the spine of the collection was the global Indian. Thousands of hours of handwork. Couture in excelsis.
