Dynamic duo Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla opened Lakme Fashion Week in their trademark theatrical style! Think Shiny Disco Balls. Think Glamour. Think Hippy Couture. ''Jawani Jaaneman'' is an ode to Retro chic: an era reloaded in a fabulous avatar… a modern collection threaded with heady nostalgia.

The catwalk was transformed into a dance floor on which models sashayed down to the tune of 70's and 80's trippy music… it was tough for guests not to join in! That said, a closer look revealed a rich testament to the breadth of fabrication and the depth of technique. Ladies may be inclined to take a second look at draped gowns hand embroidered with resham silk: perfect for awards season! Or sensuous saris with crystallised appliqué—on this reviewer's wish list! The looks crafted from duchess satin, organza and net had force. As did the rest of this collection. Riffing off Disco, and nostalgic for a gold jumpsuit they had designed for the late Bollywood icon Parveen Babi, the show progressed from cocktail dresses with silver threadwork and sinuous gowns with lace or floral threadwork to ones that expressed just the kind of artful madness that people crave from the brand; by the time we arrived at ruffled gowns clotted with stones and bugle beads, we were back under the duo's spell.

This season, they let their imaginations roam, and then reeled it back in for a coherent, catwalk narrative. We loved menswear that featured  checks in patti and sequins. Or chikan in a new avatar with crystals and sequins. Men are going to want these looks from the moment the show ends—if their applause is anything to go by!
