AMIT HANSRAJ

Fashion Stylist Amit Hansraj kindly allowed us to get a glimpse inside his world with an interview focused on life as a stylist.

The moment I saw Amit I did a double take… I had mentally prepared myself for color and drama considering I was to meet a stylist... but in walked a six-foot man in an impeccable jacket teamed with denims and loafers. Having worked with two chic, not to mention successful fashion designers Ritu Beri and Malini Ramani, it was expected of him to launch a label one day; instead he chose styling. “I was aware there is a lot more money in designing than styling but it has never been about making money or playing the right moves… it has always been about following my heart,” he says.

Well, he is now stylist of key advertising campaigns in addition to styling celebrities. Few know he has designed the look of the first Aman property in India: Aman Bagh in Alwar. How is it that after doing so many assignments he has never been in the media is the question that played in mind? "Here too, it's about priorities. I have never felt the need to issue a press release or hire a PR company. I believe you get due recognition and when you do it is the best feeling”.

Another cup of coffee and a lot of probing later he shares an anecdote while designing the look of the movie 'Toh Baat Pakki' starring Tabu. “Movies are a different ball game altogether. It is not just about talent… you have to deal with a lot of other stuff. Tabu was fantastic and we had a month-long schedule in Ooty. The only memories I have of the film are of going for long walks with Tabu and Rahila Mirza (daughter of director Aziz Mirza and co-producer of the movie).” His work was noticed and Amit is is now styling an untitled film directed and produced by Dharmesh Darshan.

The most memorable moment he has had was “bumping into Cher at the Plaza Athenaeum in Paris and gifting her a handcrafted denim jacket which she wore at one of her stage performances in 2008.” WOW! Amit stays with his parents and Labrador, Noori. It was on the tip of my tongue to ask him was about to ask him why he stays in Delhi instead of Mumbai which is a better place in terms of work and then I remembered that for Amit Hansraj it’s about following his heart…
