DELHI: All roads lead to The Imperial when Varuna Anand launched a heirloom collection of handwoven shawls including sui kaam Jamavars, kanis and kalamkaris—curated by Sara Abdullah Pilot. An event of this stature demands a regal celebration and Varuna personally greeted family and friends Former Union Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, Sachin Pilot, Sara Pilot and Veronique Poles. "My husband's family has been in Kashmir for seven generations. He supported my passion for textiles and put me in touch with old master craftsmen there which subsequently led to the creation of my label 'The Splendour of Kashmir'. The time, patience and dedication that goes into creating each handwoven shawl, with the finest hand embroideries, makes it drapable art" she told me over high tea.

As I checked out the beautifully curated collection, I fell in love with an ivory Pashmina with intricate zari work — and I wasn't the only one! Almost everyone was drawn to it but to our dismay… it was sold! In fact, when we returned from high tea in the garden, most pieces were sold! ''Each time we sell one of these works of art, we tell buyers that they are encouraging craftsmen to create another piece; a craftsmen works on one piece for 12-14 months and gets encouraged when we support them to create more pieces'' she revealed, adding ''I want to recreate old shawl motifs that are documented in history and recreate pieces from past eras. It's a project I'll work on soon.''
