THE MAKING OF 'THE COVEN OF BLACK NARCISSUS'

— VIJAY BALHARA

"When I first met Roberta – my model – the first thing that struck me was her green eyes and I told her that she has the snake eyes that I wanted for the protagonist of this story!! Before the shoot I just told one thing to Roberta: that I need her to give a part of her soul in every picture that we took. Then gradually I explained the entire story of the collection to her as she sat for her hair and make-up. To make her comfortable I started clicking her pictures on my Ipad. I kept telling her that she has to believe herself to be a black magic girl who is dark from inside but in the most unassuming manner. Storytelling in this shoot was very important. I did not want it to be a flat look book shoot. Hair and make-up was fairly simple. All I wanted was neatly combed hair and crimson red lips. Because the collection has this unspoken language of its own I didn't want to interrupt this communication with a lot of make-up and distraction in terms of some bizarre hairstyle. My photographer and friend Anand Seth was a tremendous help as he explained the body language and expressions to Roberta. He was more of a shoot director than just being a photographer and he created the perfect energy and vibes required at every given moment of the shoot. After the shoot I took three weeks to work on all the special effects to create a fantasy jungle.. a dark world of black magic in all its glory. Ideally I had wanted to shoot in a jungle under the moonlight with lots of butterflies and flowers and exotic trees but since we shot in the studio I had to create this world using special effects ☺"
